Completion of the Workshop"The Sexist Use of Language and Gender Stereotypes. Seeking of a Fair Language.

The workshop entitled "The Sexist Use of Language and Gender Stereotypes. Seeking of a "fair" Language" was concluded with great success and significant participation. It was organized by the Center for the Study of Hellenic Language and Culture (HeLaS) of the University of Ioannina in collaboration with the Unit of "Greek Language, Culture, and Media" of the Laboratory for the Study of Social Issues, Media, and Education of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the University of Ioannina. The workshop aimed to support interdisciplinary lifelong learning opportunities for students, but also for the general public, and was offered free of charge. It included a total of 4 sessions and took place from March 12 to April 16, 2024, at the premises of the "Stavros Niarchos" DIKEPPEE. The program was attended by more than 60 people from the student community, but also from the places of work and education in the region of Epirus.

In the framework of the workshop sessions, serious language issues related to language uses that establish sexist stereotypes were presented and analyzed. Furthermore, linguistic rappresentations of sexism and exclusionary phenomena in the workplace, media and education were explained.Particular emphasis was placed on the concept of neutral and inclusive language, in the context of the effort to cultivate a culture in which the sexist use of language is limited or prevented, while at the same time seeking and facilitating the use of a language that is expressed with justice and equality towards the sexes and social classes.

The workshop was held in the "Multiple Uses" room of the "Stavros Niarchos" DIKEPPEE and the academic coordination was by Mrs. Nicoletta Tsitsanoudi - Mallidis, Professor of Linguistics and Greek Language of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the School of Educational Sciences of the University of Ioannina, associate of the Center for Greek Studies of Greece at Harvard University and head of the "Greek Language, Culture and Media" Unit of the Laboratory for the Study of Social Issues, Media and Education of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Ioannina.
